Hey lovelies! Wanted to give you heads up that during the holidays Accustomed Chaos site will be going through some blog maintenance.  With this the site might be acting funky for the next few days so be sure to check back on Monday, December 27th and everything should be sorted out then.

I will be taking a short bloggy/social media break this weekend to work on the blog maintenance and to spend time with my family during the holidays this weekend.  Wishing you all a happy, safe and love filled holiday!

See you all on Monday!!

Random Stuff: Getting To Know Me

Happy Lazy Sunday Everyone! Well, lazy for me. Can you believe that I had a wonderful date night last night with the husband AND the kids slept in this morning?! I know - twilight zone right?!    Since my brain is in lala twilight zone due to time off from the kids and a sleep in - today's post will be a bunch of random things all about me. . .
  • I hate chicken. I will eat it if its heavily gluten free breaded & deep fried or covered in sauce but not otherwise
  • I usually always wear one sock in the house. One sock. Why? Cause I hate feet - especially when feet touch my feet - even my own
  • I can not medially drive - so I walk everywhere.  Not looking forward to the winter!
  • I eat macaroni (like mac & cheese) with a spoon. My husband has always made fun of me for this because he adamantly feels it should be eaten with a fork.
  • I stuff Kleenex up my nose when I have a cold. Why? I hate when my nose is plugged & if i can trick myself into thinking it's plugged because there's tissue up there - i am happier.
  • My shoe size is 7/8. So is my moms. She has a bigger shoe collection then I do and it is very handy to have the same shoe size.
  • I get ridiculously excited for my birthday. I hate getting older but I love the "it's all about me" thing.
  •  I grew up as a vegetarian. There are still some meats i will never try & many I have no idea how to cook.

Looking For YOUR Help & Input

Hello Lovelies! I am hoping I could snag a moment of your time & get a quick favor out of you. In an effort to find out what you guys like to read and what you like to see here on Accustomed Chaos I have come up with a very quick survey.  I would be forever happy with you if you could take a moment and answer 6 quick questions on what you read (or don't read) here on Accustomed Chaos. It is all anonymous & please feel free to answer honestly!

I compiled this and put together this survey myself & I promise it is just for my own use so I know what direction I would like to go with this blog.

Thank you!!

Why I Have Been M.I.A These Past 2 Weeks

I feel so disconnected these past 2 weeks - I haven't been online much in this blog, twitter or my facebook page both last week & this week and that is SO not like me.  It is usually easy to get a hold of me and I love chatting with everyone and writing posts & all that stuff ... so to my loyal readers & new ones please let me explain...

You all know my household has been hit with a nasty flu after cold after flu and October 15th I was nearing the end of the flu (as were my kids and husband) but I still had this HARDcore cough that would have me gasping for air and puking (sorry, ew I know!).

Well, dudes that Friday I coughed so hard I tore 3 muscles in my neck. Yeah, an injury only I could do and it has been painful!

trapezius muscle
I ended up tearing both my left and right trapezius muscles - I have had an ongoing issue with my right side that I had been prescribed physio and massage way back in June that I was supposed to go to 4 times a week, but scheduling with 3 young kids & a husband who just started a new job I had not been able to go. Now, I have totally messed up both those muscles.

Scalenus medius muscle
On top of the trapezius muscles I also tore my scalenus medius muscle on my right side.  I have been to the doctor twice in the past two weeks for the tears and I am currently on 4 different medications because of it: a high pain killer medication, high anti inflammatory medication, high muscle spasm medication and a med for my stomach because one of the side effects of these meds are ulcers.  Making you jealous aren't I?

So, to say the least I have been in a lot of pain, very tired from all the medication and a busy stay at home mom (thankfully my older brother is in town & has been here with me).  I have to do all these crazy exercises to try to heal plus fit in the physiotherapy and massage therapy sessions 4 times a week.

My apologies to those who are waiting for guest posts, articles, email replies - I promise I will get all back into the swing of things soon. Also -- if you are going to Blissdom Canada this week & see me asleep in the corner or acting all crazy - I promise it is just because of the medication ;)

::  How are all you doing?! I miss you! ::

I'm a Proud Theta Mom!

Hello Theta Moms! My name is Devan and I am a stay at home mom to three beautiful kids (aged 4, 3 &1) and a wife to an amazing and supportive man who has been my sweetheart since high school. I started Accustomed Chaos in January 2010 to create a space that was just for me – where I could write my thoughts and share my passions; a little of everything.

We live in a gluten free household because both myself and 3 year old daughter have Celiac Disease – an autoimmune disorder triggered by gluten and in order to keep us safe my other two children and my husband eat gluten free as well.  When I was first diagnosed 4 years ago I was lost on what I can eat and thought my life of loving food was over.  Over the years I have really come to realize that I am not missing out at all and love sharing my recipes and favourite gluten free products.  Gluten free versions of Oreo-type cookies, lasagna, chicken fingers and lemon meringue pie – all possible and delicious!

How The Media Is Making Things Worse For Celiac Disease

The road to motherhood has not been easy for me and I use my blog as a safe place to work through the grief left by my 10 miscarriages.  The support from my readers and fellow bloggers has meant more to me then I can express and I never knew how much e-hugs would help in my journey.  I use Accustomed Chaos and my story to break the silence of miscarriage and bring this taboo topic into the light.

My Journey Through 10 Miscarriages

I am also a passionate attachment parent and breastfeeding advocate.  I have been breastfeeding my youngest now for 20 months and would like to continue until she plans to wean.  What you wont find here on Accustomed Chaos is any judgment or bashing of any kind – especially when it comes to breastfeeding vs formula. I am a strong believer in informed choice – whatever that choice is.

Breastfeeding Advocacy vs Formula Bashing

I am all about keeping it real and honest.  I am accustomed to the chaos of children and all that comes with it. I don't pretend to be perfect and I do my best to cherish these moments - even the crazy ones  - because time goes way too quickly.

Taking Off The Mommy Mask

Blogging and the Theta Mom community has been so supportive of me and I love what Heather has built up. I had the opportunity to meet Theta Mom in person at BlogHer this summer and she is even more lovely in person!  Thank you to Heather for all your support and thank you fellow Theta Moms!

Back Home From NYC & BlogHer10: My Recap

NYC photo: my view from the bus
I am back home after a 4 day 3 night trip to NYC for BlogHer10. I am still trying to process the weekend - it went so fast and saying I was overwhelmed is kind of an understatement.  It was so busy and went by so quickly and it was a mixture of amazing with a small pinch of disappointment.

I was nervous going into BlogHer because I was leaving my kids- first time ever leaving Baby E & first time in 18 months leaving the older 2 {last time i left them over night I was in the hospital delivering Baby E}.  I am so lucky to have an amazing family who took turns watching the kids mostly at my house to keep them in their routine & keep them entertained and happy.

My trip started early on Thursday and a 13 hour bus ride into NYC. Crossing the border was interesting. I have been to the US many times but not since needing a passport. The custom's guy asked the typical questions. When he asked why I was going to the US i answered that I was on my way to a conference. I remember reading all about HerBadMother's experience a few weeks ago when she answered that she was a "Mommy Blogger" & all that happened after that. So I answered that I was going to a social media conference and he was not sure what to make of that and asked if I had any documentation - thankfully I did and he was satisfied.

Once we got into NYC we (i went with my husband and our best friend to keep him company) walked through Time Square & Broadway to get to our hotel. We stayed at Le Parker Meridien & it was wonderful! Loved the rooms, staff & i even had a safe to eat dinner there one night.  Our view was amazing:

View from hotel room: looking at Central Park
Then began the conference! I had done all of the reading of what last years conferences were like and honestly, still didn't prepare more for how HUGE this conference was. There were approx 2400 bloggers there from every different topic you could think of & it was hard to recognize anyone without intensely staring at their name tags (awkward).

Opening Ceremony
Now as you all know I have Celiac Disease. I have talked about cross contamination before and a few weeks before heading to the conference and then again a few days before the conference I had contacted BlogHer to ask if the food they provide would be safe to eat and if they would have safe options for people with Celiac Disease. This is where the sprinkle of disappointment came in. I was assured a few times that there would be safe food for my diet.... I walked into the breakfast hall and there it was ... buffet. If I did not have celiac disease I would have been in heaven (I wish i took a picture) because the food looked and smelled delicious. However a buffet is like a breeding ground for cross contamination and is not safe - for any person with Celiac Disease.

I was so excited to be able to connect with some friends I have met online through blogging and put a meet them in real life & the opportunity to meet new friends. At first I thought it would be easy to pick these people out of the crowd - but so not the case. I was happy that I had some phone numbers on hand.  I got to meet a lot of the people I had hoped to but sadly not all - and not really close. When people say there isn't enough time, they were not kidding.

Myself, Theta Mom, Complicated Mama, I'm Gonna Kill Him & Scary Mommy
I was also looking forward to the sessions and for most of the ones I went to - they were incredible. I loved the Autism panel, Radical Mom Bloggers panel was amazing, and I was touched by the Grief, Tragedy and Loss panel {helped me with my conflicting thoughts on sharing my miscarriage experiences}.  If you missed the Closing Keynote you really missed something amazing - it was so profound and so incredible - i wish no one had missed it!

The swag: I know a lot of people have opinions on the swag. I had read before hand to be prepared for it and there was a LOT! I quickly roamed though the Expo Hall and I was slightly disappointed with the lack of range of companies. There was not really one there that related to what I am about. There were the food companies that were not allergy friendly and there were the baby bottles & baby food & commercial toys so this part didnt really interest me.

I did have an amazing round table lunch with some amazing fellow Breastfeeding Advocates. It was so great to be able to discuss the WHO Code {which I am planning a post on} and other breastfeeding topics. Each one of those women were inspirational and it was so nice to be a part of.

If you saw this shirt at BlogHer - it was me :)
I want to say a HUGE thank you to my sponsor Kinnikinnick Foods. Without their support I would not have been able to attend and with the whole food situation it made me love this company even more! Not only are they committed to providing safe food for people with food allergies or special medical concerns, I was so happy to have some of their TASTY food with me so I was able to eat.  This experience made me even more aware of the health reason people are eating gluten free {I met quite a lot of people who are trying the GF diet and finding they feel so much better} and that there is still so much more information that needs to be made aware to the food service industry on what is SAFE food for people with Celiac Disease. Kinnikinnick Foods is very committed to spreading awareness and providing safe foods - they went to Disney World & Disney Land to help train the kitchen staff on CD preparations and setup a food allergy friendly kitchen!

Me at the end of Day 2 of BlogHer - exhausted!
Thank you so much to everyone I met and got to see! I had an incredible time at BlogHer - so glad I got to experience that! I am sorry for those I didn't get the chance to meet - I wish there was more time!

Next up - Blissdom Canada!!
